Best Spots, Times & Proposal Tips from a London Photographer
Last updated: May 2026
A Big Ben photoshoot is one of the most romantic things you can plan in London. Whether you’re proposing in secret, celebrating a new engagement, marking an anniversary, or just visiting the city and wanting photos that aren’t selfies — the Elizabeth Tower as your backdrop is unbeatable.
I’m Ewa, a London photographer. Big Ben is the most-requested location in my proposal and engagement bookings. I’ve planned more secret proposals here than I can count, and I know exactly which corner of Westminster works at 8 AM in February and which one is almost unshootable at noon in July (not for me!) This guide is everything I tell my couples before they fly in.

Why Big Ben is the Perfect Spot for a Proposal
I’ve photographed proposals at every famous London landmark, but Big Ben is different because it works on three levels at once:
- Recognisable from anywhere in the world: The skyline tells the story instantly without words.
- Grand but not intimidating: The open space allows your partner to react naturally without feeling trapped in a crowd.
- Forgiving light: The open setting means flattering light at both sunrise and sunset, depending on which side we shoot from.
The 4 Best Photo Spots Near Big Ben
The trick to good photos here isn’t luck — it’s knowing the exact spot. Here are my four favorites:
1. The Iconic Red Phone Boxes
Nothing says “London” quite like this. It’s the quintessential shot of the tower framed right next to a bright red telephone box. It’s a must-have for every gallery, though you might have to wait a few minutes for your turn!
2. Westminster Bridge (Mid-Span)
The classic London shot. You’re suspended over the Thames with the tower rising directly behind you. It’s crowded, but I can use specific angles to make the crowds disappear.
3. Parliament Square
Best for engagement shoots where you want movement. Think walking, twirling, or sitting on the steps near Westminster Abbey.
4. South Bank (Opposite Parliament) — Best for Proposals
This is the absolute winner for a surprise moment. Standing directly across from the Houses of Parliament gives you that wide, “postcard” view. It’s iconic, grand, and offers the perfect unobstructed skyline for a proposal.

Best Time of Day for Your Shoot
The same spot looks completely different depending on when you stand there:
- Sunrise (5:30 AM – 8:30 AM): Almost empty. The photos look like you own the city.
- Golden Hour (1 hour before sunset): My most popular slot. Everything and everyone glows.
- Blue Hour (15–30 min after sunset): The clock dials light up against a deep blue sky. Pure magic.
- Midday (11 AM – 4 PM): Harsh light, but manageable for a pro. Grey, overcast days are actually great for the stonework.
How a Secret Proposal Photoshoot Works
If you’re nervous, don’t be. Here is the process:
- After booking. I send you everything you need: a map of the exact spot, photos of where you’ll be standing, and my exclusive “Pro-Proposal” tips. This includes advice on what to say, how to position the ring box so it doesn’t show in your pocket, and how to handle the nerves so you stay present in the moment.
- The morning of: I send you my live location. I’ll be hiding nearby, looking like just another tourist.
- The moment: You drop to one knee, and I start shooting with a long lens.
- The reveal: After you’ve had your moment, I introduce myself and we start a relaxed engagement session.
What to Wear for Your Big Ben Photoshoot
The tower’s stone is warm beige, so you want to contrast with it:
- Choose one color and one neutral: For example, a burgundy dress and a charcoal suit.
- Avoid logos: They distract from the background and your faces.
- Layer up: A long, elegant coat looks better in photos than a puffer jacket.
- The “Secret Weapon”: Bring a clear umbrella. It makes rain look romantic and sparkly.
Logistics: Permits and Rules
- No permits needed for non-commercial handheld photography (proposals, families, vacations).
- No tripods allowed on Westminster Bridge.
- Drones are completely banned in this airspace.

Photographer’s note: I’ve shot at Big Ben in summer heatwaves, sideways February rain, the November fog of 2024, and once at 6:30 AM in midsummer for a sunrise proposal that went viral on their family WhatsApp. Whatever weather London throws at you on your photoshoot day — we’ll make it work.
